The Math Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools (MOEMS) is designed to teach major strategies for problem solving, develop flexibility in solving problems, strengthen mathematical intuition and foster mathematical creativity and ingenuity. MOEMS consists of 5 contests, running monthly from November 2017 - March 2018. Each contest lasts 30 minutes and is made up of 5 non-routine problems requiring careful mathematical thinking. The contests are designed to be taken as a series. Following each contest, the answers and the solution key will be distributed and there will be an opportunity to discuss the strategies and solutions for the problems in that contest.
The Math Olympiad is recommended for students in grades 4-8. There are two divisions: Elementary (grades 4-6) and Middle (grades 6-8). Students younger than 4th grade are permitted to participate, but the Math Olympiad program does not recommend this due to concerns that younger children may become frustrated, rather than excited, about math. Students having completed 8th grade are not allowed to participate.
This is not a drop-off program. Parents are expected to remain in the building during the program or leave their child in the care of another parent, not the provider. Parents may be asked to help with classroom management issues or proctoring the contests.
