This class will focus on writing research type essays.

Students may pick any topic they'd like to learn more about, or use a paper for another subject, such as writing, science, or history.

Topics will include how to choose a good topic (not to broad, not too narrow), how to organize your information, how to take notes, how to organize the essay (general structure, 5-paragraph and beyond), editing and revising, and MLA formatting. The workshop will also include warm-ups in grammar and mechanics, and individualized instruction on those topics as needed.

Expectations

This is a serious, high-school level course. Recommended age: 13+.

Weekly homework will be required, with assignments geared to the individual's writing level.

Prerequisites

This will be a small-group, individualized class. I can work with many different levels -- from kids who haven't written essays before to kids who want to hone their skills -- in the same class, so everyone's welcome!

Materials

There is nothing to purchase for this class.  I will be drawing on many resources, which may include Michael Clay Thompson LA, Killgallon Sentence Composing, The Lively Art of Writing, Pattern Based Writing, Schaum, and others.

Dropping off your teen or staying at Voyagers

Our Friday Resource Center classes allow drop-off for specific classes taken à la carte. This is not a staffed drop-off program or hang-out time for teens. In addition to the instructors leading classes, a volunteer chaperone will be present in the common areas at Voyagers during the Resource Center classes and the breaks in between classes. Teens registered for multiple classes may stay at Voyagers between classes; they are expected to wait quietly in the common areas. Any teen who is disruptive may lose the privilege of staying at Voyagers between classes.

Parents are welcome to wait in the common areas at Voyagers while their teens are in their classes. We ask that you and any accompanying children show respect for our neighbors by keeping the noise level down. Please clean up after yourself. We do not have a paid cleaning crew. Please leave our space as you found it, which includes not leaving dirty dishes or food items.

We are looking for additional volunteers to take turns as chaperones. Please let contact Julie Szekely Paine if you are planning on staying at Voyagers while your teen is in classes and would be willing to take some turns as a chaperone. Our volunteer chaperones enable us to offer the option of dropping teens off at these programs, and we appreciate the service they provide. As a volunteer-run organization with no staff, we are not able to offer this option without the contributions of parent volunteers.

About the instructor

Erin homeschooled her own children through high school which was when she found her  passion for teaching language.  She began by teaching Spanish to small homeschool groups with her own kids as part of the class almost 10 years ago, and has been teaching classes and tutoring in Spanish, German, and English LA ever since.

Erin has always had a penchant for collecting curricula which approach teaching from numerous angles and for a variety of learning styles.  This has made her teaching style extremely versatile and adaptive to the needs of the kids in her classes with great results.
